The Rt Hon Lord Herbert of South Downs CBE PC is a Conservative Peer in the House of Lords. Lord Herbert was previously the Conservative Member of Parliament for Arundel and South Downs from 2005 to 2019, in which time he also served as Minister of State for Police and Criminal Justice.
Before politics, Lord Herbert studied Law and Land Economy at Magdalene College Cambridge before going to the CRD to work on the Conservative Party's rural and environmental policies. Lord Herbert then went to work for British Field Sports Society as their Director of Public Affairs. Following this, Lord Herbert would later form the Countryside Alliance, the think tank Reform and also play a pivotal role in the Business for Sterling group which fought to keep the United Kingdom out of the euro single currency.
After his election to Parliament as a Conservative MP, Lord Herbert held several briefs on the Shadow Cabinet before becoming a Minister following the 2010 General Election.
Upon Lord Herbert's return to the backbenches, he set up the Freedom to Marry campaign ahead of the Same-Sex Marriage vote of which he was a staunch supporter.
In 2021, Lord Herbert was appointed the UK's Special Envoy on LGBT Rights and is a commanding voice on LGBT+ rights as an active Conservative peer in the House of Lords.
