The text on the reverse of the postcard, addressed to each Conservative MP individually, includes the following facts:
- Civil Partnerships are different from marriage. It makes my relationship different and less valid
- Defining marriage to fit contemporary society is nothing new. A minum age requirement was introduced in 1753 and civil marriage was introduced in 1836
- Religious institutions can choose to marry or not whoever they wish. This Bill specifically defends religious freedoms.
- Claims that the ECHR will force religious institutions are baseless. No other European country has been forced.
- Supporting equal marriage is the right thing to do: popular with most people and recognises all citizens as equally valid.
- Polls consistently show public opinion supports same-sex marriage, with figures including:
73% (IPSOS MORI 8-9 December 2012)
60% (Survation for the Mail on Sunday 15 December 2012)
62 % (ICM for The Guardian 26 December 2012)
53 %, rising to 70% of those aged 25-39 (YouGov 9-10 May 2013)
